What’s scarier for Republicans than a Democrat stealing one of them their Senate seats? Said Democrat having a wife, that’s funny.

While Fox News sorted out its feelings about underperforming in the interim periods, it has taken it upon itself attack Gisele Fetterman, wife of Pennsylvania Senator-elect John Fettermanfor daring to “undermine” her 1.80m tall husband by cutting off his head in photos on social media.

Gisele, armed with a legendary sense of humor and a photo resizing tool, has a recurring a little cutting off her partner’s head from photos of the two. On Tuesday she once again indulged in the joke centers itself in a photo taken on John’s first day at work. It’s a fun wink! It’s funny! He is very tall!

Fox News is apparently assuming an attempted coup between the families. The network aired a lengthy segment this week in which they impaled Gisele for centering herself in their photos. “It feels like Pennsylvania voted [John’s] woman, and she certainly promotes that idea,” said one of the hosts. Conservative commentator Tiana Lowe tweeted, “She wanted this so bad for herself lol. I hope it was worth the 15 minutes to subject her husband and marriage to this.”

To put it bluntly: that’s Gisele’s thing. She’s done it a million times, and even specifically said on Twitter that it is a running gag.

Well, I don’t turn to Fox News for comedy. While its anchors have certainly made me laugh in the past, it’s really bewildering to see how close these folks are. I’m still not entirely sure if this is just a malicious joke or if they really don’t understand what a joke is. I’m inclined to believe the latter, in part because there aren’t actually any fellow Gisele GOPs playfully teasing their political spouses. I think they really can’t charge a woman for hilariously taunting her husband instead of standing quietly beside him in silence so as not to crack his fragile armor of manhood. Mike Pence, you will seriously remember calls his wife Karen “mother” and refuses to dine alone with other women—even co-workers.

The closest the GOP has come in recent years is to having a spouse who is “funny.” Melania is notorious “I really don’t care, do I?” Jacket she wore in an immigrant detention center. She claimed it was a scathing message aimed at the “fake news” media. I forgot to laugh, right?

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give quick credit to unintentionally funny GOP wife Callista Gingrich and her use of Facetune. The wife of Newt, the former Speaker of the House, has notoriously worked on her face for some 30 years in selfies with her husband while making Newt look like he’s been left out in the sun for a week. (I really don’t think this is intentional humor on Cally’s part—but if it is, I take it all back and want her to be nominated for the Kennedy Center Honors.)

For Gisele Fetterman, however, the humor is very intentional, as she said Kylie Cheung from Jezebel in an interview:

Candidates usually leave their social media accounts to employees. Is John that funny in real life? “No, he really is that funny. I think we both are,” said Gisele. I can imagine that a sense of humor was important in an election campaign that didn’t skimp on stressful moments: John suffered a stroke back in May and said in June that he “almost died.”

“I always say it’s important to take work seriously, and we take work very, very seriously,” Gisele said. “But we don’t take ourselves or each other seriously. And I think you can see that. We are committed to the work, but we will enjoy it. That’s the only way to get through it.”

While John Fetterman rose to fame in the past election his hilarious burns From his Republican opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Gisele wants everyone to know that she can match and even surpass him when it comes to humor, which I have to respect a lot.

It seems that a woman who lightly teases her spouse is so far outside of the GOP’s oppressively narrow perception of traditional marriage that she really can’t get the joke. Luckily, Gisele doesn’t need her laughs — she has a sizable following who understand and appreciate that wives making fun of their husbands doesn’t have to be an attempt to undermine his career.

That said, if there are any conservative political wives reading this right now, the field is WIDE OPEN for you to swoop in and be named America’s Funniest Republican Wife. My DMs are open too. Fox News misses the joke in Gisele Fetterman cutting out John’s head from photos
