Earlier this week, an anti-abortion activist held five fetuses in their Washington, D.C. fridge revealed that the group they belong to belongs to actually had 115 fetuses in his possession. The press conference in which They shared this collected information more questions than answers, including: Did they really get those fetuses from a medical waste truck outside of an abortion clinic? Is this all just a major distraction from the fact that activist Lauren Handy is it? face more than 10 years imprisonment for blocking the entrance to an abortion clinic?
Handy is the director of activism for Progressive anti-abortion uprising (PAAU), a group formed in October 2021 (with a misleading name, because it is not possible to oppose abortionnever be progressive). But other anti-abortion groups are also capitalizing on the story – notably Live Action, Led by Lila Rose – and right wing media are only too happy to amplify him for them.
Rose went to Tucker Carlson’s show last night and during the short sectionshe named the fetuses “Children” and claimed without evidence that all of them would have been viable outside the uterus and that they were disposed of in medical waste bins. (No one can prove exactly where the fetuses came from.) Then, without any sense of irony, she cited “the incredible dishonesty of the media working to protect abortifacies.”
Her group also attempted to equate the public display of stolen fetuses with the open-coffin burial of Emmitt Till. who was murdered by white supremacists in 1955:
Reference to fetuses as “infants” and “children”. an arson designed to portray abortion providers as murderers and encourage violence against them. Fox News has done this in the past, and it has resulted in actual vviolence against vendors, including a very high profile assassination in 2009.
Groups like PAAU and Live Action promoted the unverified claims about how the five fetuses were aborted prompted a letter by 23 Republican congressmen urging the Mayor of DC to open an investigation. (live action released the letter on his website and divided it on social.) All of this was covered by far-right media The daily wire to beard to a segment on One America News (OAN) that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene divided on Instagram.
Rose shared a letter on Friday 69 Republican members of Congress to Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding that the Justice Department investigate the allegations. This saga is not over yet.
