EL PASO, Texas (KTRK) — The Texas Rangers, FBI and several other agencies are investigating after two migrants were shot dead, one fatally, in a rural county outside of El Paso, Texas.
A spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office notified them Tuesday of a fatal shooting and reported that a preliminary investigation found a truck carrying two men pulled over and hit a group Standing migrants shot next to the road always water.
“A male immigrant was shot dead,” their statement said. A migrant woman was also shot but is recovering at an El Paso hospital, the spokesman added.
The two suspects were taken into custody on Thursday and have each been charged with manslaughter, the spokesman added.
ABC News has confirmed that one of the men arrested was Mike Sheppard, a former warden at the West Texas Detention Center. A spokesman for the facility would not confirm the name, but said the supervisor there was fired “due to an off-duty incident unrelated to his employment.” He and his brother, Mark Sheppard, were arrested, prison records show.
The detention center is in Sierra Blanca, Texas, about four miles north of where the DPS spokesman said the shooting took place.
No further information was released.
