Football takes a backseat when star player leaves his team to take part in a reality dating show

When a player works hard to ensure their team’s success, it’s only obvious that they’ll be rewarded for it and given the same level of loyalty they’ve shown. Usually, this gratitude takes the form of promotions, public recognition, and so on. But Macclesfield FC, a football club in England, has chosen a unique way to show their loyalty to one of their star players – by allowing him to leave the club so he can take part in the reality TV show, island of love.

Clare has been a striker for the reborn Macclesfield FC since joining their ranks in 2021 and was a key player in helping Head of Football Robbie Savage rebuild the club’s reputation. Given Clare’s rise to the club’s top goalscorer last season, he signed a new contract that will remain in effect until 2024.

But when he revealed his plans to join the island of love Villa as one of his first bombshells, as the show returns for its winter edition in South Africa, the club decided to give him an extended leave of absence, allowing him to leave mid-season to show the “same loyalty” he has maintained since he joined them.

The club released a public statement on the decision, assuring that Clare’s departure was only temporary.

Reaction to the announcement hasn’t exactly been brimming with fans happy with the decision, as many are unhappy that the club is allowing their player to sideline football. But some credit it as the best decision Macclesfield could have made, as if they had refused, Clare could still have joined the show and left the club forever. Cutting ties with their bankable player wouldn’t do them any good in the long run as he could just sign up with a new club once he got back.
