Fears the Grand National may not get the full field of 40 runners as there are still a “worryingly low” number of horses left

A “REVIEWINGLY LOW” number of horses remain in the Grand National – for fear the race may not reach the full field of 40 runners.

There were 57 horses left at the last scratch stage.

This is a massive drop from the 78 that were still in the running at the same time last year.

And even after narrowing the field down to 57, Captain Kangaroo was eliminated by Willie Mullins and Quick Wave by Venetia Williams.

Recent Ryanair winner Envoi Allen has since been ejected from the Cheveley Park Stud owners.

While Gordon Elliott’s Fakiera, Milan Native, Punitive, Gevrey, Defi Bleu, and Battleoverdoyen all look like they’re not walking.

Suddenly the number of horses left for Saturday week’s blockbuster has dropped to 48.

With over a week to go until the big day, who knows what hits some runners might get by then.

Martin Keighley, who coaches Harry Redknapp’s 66-1 Back On The Lash chance, recently sounded the alarm about the number of runners.

He said the footie legend keeps calling to see if enough horses have gone out for his to make it.

Keighley said: “Harry always calls to see if he’s coming in.

“I think he will now. Some even say that there might not even be a full field now.”

As respected racing journalist Chris Cook wrote in the Racing Post, the number of horses remaining is “worryingly low”.

We won’t know the final confirmed field before 10am next Thursday when the declarations are complete.

The £1million Grand National remains the most famous race in the world – with the winner receiving £500,000.

Noble Yeats, a surprise 50-1 winner 12 months ago for amateur jockey and dentist Sam Waley-Cohen, is defending his crown 8-1.

But perhaps it’s market leader Corach Rambler that has scared off the competition.

The two-time Ultima winner is well in the ratings at £10 and is sure to enjoy the rise of Scotland trainer Lucinda Russell.
