Even parents in San Francisco have their limits – Orange County Register
San Francisco is arguably America’s most progressive city, so the recall of three school board members on February 15 stunned political observers across the country. Voters ousted Alison Collins, Gabriela López and Faauuga Moliga by 59%, 48% and 42% respectively. Other members were spared because they did not stay on the board long enough to qualify for a recall vote.
It shouldn’t be difficult for anyone outside of the social justice-warrior house to understand what happened. Instead of trying to get the city’s schools up and running after the COVID-19 shutdown, the city’s school board advocated for iconic, contrarian political issues that even most Most San Francisco students – including its liberal political leaders – feel uneasy.
“My opinion is that it is really about the frustration of the Board of Education that are doing their basic job,” said Mayor London Breed. “And that is to make sure that our children get an education, that they can go back to the classroom. … They are focusing on other things that are clearly a distraction. ”
It is on the spot. As the pandemic raged, the board decided to rename 44 San Francisco public schools. It abandoned the attempt in April 2021 when the vulnerability became too much to handle. The attempt is absurd, as the board has sought to remove the names of figures including Abraham Lincoln, naturalist John Muir and Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein.
To highlight the stupidity, the board attempted to change the name of Alamo Elementary School after “mistakenly believing (it) was named for the battle of Texas and not for the Spanish word for” poplar,” reported SFist. The board also attempted to paint a mural of the history of the Works Progress Administration at George Washington High School – an act that drew comparisons to the Taliban.
More fundamentally, the board changed the merit-based admissions policy at a top high school and replaced it with a lottery system to promote diversity — what made the American community Asia’s big angry city. Most of these wars resulted in litigation – not to mention controversial public meetings focused on the imperfections of the 18th-century founders.
This ideological folly has clearly deflected attention from fundamental concerns about education. City schools remain closed. The board and its teachers union appear to be in no hurry to resume normal schooling, thus allowing the city’s students to fall further behind in their studies. The parents boiled with anger, which culminated in a rare recall campaign.
Even left-wing political analysts saw the vote as a wake-up call for progressives, seeing it as an opportunity to understand that, fundamentally, public schools are about educating students. rather than fostering broader cultural change. But the reactions of the losing sides show that they are still asleep about their ideology.
“Make no mistake, white supremacists are enjoying this. And the support of the recall is consistent with this,” López tweeted following her loss. The teachers union continues to praise the venture capitalists and billionaires who helped fund the recall campaign. Left-wing commentators see the vote as part of a conservative political campaign – never mind that Republicans make up less than 9% of San Francisco’s total registered voters.
The San Francisco recall proves that parents everywhere want their schools to provide quality education — and elected officials should weed out the nonsense.
