Andriy Yarmolenko scores in extra time for the winner while West Ham superbly advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa League

Whether this was the end of West Ham’s European dream or one of the most celebrated nights in their recent history, the Hammers would always come out with a bang.

And when it comes to the kings, it’s best not to miss them or you’ll go down swinging.

Sevilla are undisputed Europa League royals, with six crowns they are three ahead of the closest contenders for the throne and this year’s final is even set to be played in their castle: the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. It was at this stadium that Sevilla secured a 1-0 win over West Ham, debutants in this season’s competition who have missed a great deal in Spain and were punished by Munir for their waste, in the first leg of this round of 16 tie.

And so the players were tasked by David Moyes to learn on the job against these most experienced opponents, as they needed to show an efficiency that had been lacking seven days earlier.

It was also a new experience for West Ham fans, who hailed the occasion by creating a unique atmosphere at the London Stadium since the club moved here in 2016. In fact, the feeling in the ground was unlike the West Ham game in not-so-recent memory. Regardless of whether the Premier League side progressed or not, they would certainly be the protagonists in one of the most monumental nights the club had seen in decades.
