ESPN host Stephen A. Smith details terrifying COVID-19 battle

After a few weeks of absence with a severe case of COVID-19, Stephen A. Smith has returned to ‘First Take’ and made a public service announcement about his experiences with the virus, in addition to his own can’t avoid being trolled about Dallas Cowboys and their fans.

Smith explained that he had been hospitalized for the new years and that he did not know if he would make it through.

“For me personally, it happened to me in a different way,” he said.

Smith tested positive in mid-December but it really hit him just before he was hospitalized.

“You’re assuming you’re going to have a fever, maybe a cough, a severe headache — but you’ll get through it,” he said. “In a lot of cases that was the case. In my case it was completely different.

“I have a fever of 103 degrees every night. Waking up with chills and a puddle of sweat. Severe headache. Cough a lot. And it came to a point where, right before New Year’s Eve, I was in the hospital on New Year’s Day. That’s how I brought the new year.”

He said his doctors told him he would die if he wasn’t vaccinated.

“They told me, if I hadn’t been vaccinated, I wouldn’t be here. That’s how bad that is. I had pneumonia in both lungs. My liver is bad. It devastated me to the point where I still track my mass now – going to the gym every day, walking before running. Work your way up because I’m still not 100 percent with my lungs, but I’m COVID negative. I am on my way to recovery.

“But if it weren’t for a few doctors, I wouldn’t be here. Love and respect what they did. Love and respect for those in the sports community and ESPN executives who check in on me every day. Dave Roberts, Norby Williamson, Jimmy Pitaro – I can’t thank you enough”.

Smith encouraged people to wear masks to protect others.

“Everybody is different,” he said. “My sister smokes and she got COVID and she was fine for 3-4 days. Me? I don’t smoke and it almost got me out.

“I think one thing is important, no matter how you feel about the vaccine, that mask is important. The reason why the mask is so important is that you don’t know how the next person is affected. I am affected differently than you are affected.

Smith is excited to be back on television.

“I am very happy to be back. I missed work. In the last month, I have experienced more sick days than I have in my 28 years in this business combined. I don’t have to take many sick days, but I did this month just to stay alive. And I can’t tell you how fortunate and sincerely blessed I am to be sitting here today – because two and a half weeks, three weeks ago, I didn’t know if I would make it. ”

And, of course, it won’t be a day later Cowboy season is over if he doesn’t take a moment to troll the organization and its fans in a video he posts to Twitter, where he claims that Dallas fans “deserve” to “suffer” after the Cowboys’ loss in the Wild Card round.

It’s great to have him back.
