Edwin van der Sar is treated after suffering a brain hemorrhage

Van der Sar, 52, won the Premier League four times during his time at United as well as the Champions League in 2008, which he also won at Ajax.

After retiring, he returned to Ajax where he took up the position of CEO in 2016.

“On Friday Edwin van der Sar had a brain hemorrhage. He is currently hospitalized in intensive care and in stable condition,” Ajax said in a statement on Twitter.

“As soon as there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We think of you.”

Although Ajax didn’t give any further details, it was reported that Van der Sar was hospitalized during his stay in Croatia after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

After a disappointing season for Ajax, which saw the club finish third in the Eredivise and fail to qualify for the Champions League, Van der Sar announced he would be stepping down after almost 11 years on the club’s board.

“I feel the need to step away, rest and do other things,” he said on Twitter in late May.

“It doesn’t feel good to be making decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That’s why I decided to resign.”
