For the second straight game, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was caught at a Rams game – a Super Bowl attended by 70,000 people – following a trend among powerful California Democrats to do the same.

At the AFC Championship two weeks ago, pictures of Garcetti without a mask were leaked, along with San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Governor Gavin Newsom.

This is not the first time for Breed or Newsom. Breed has been taken out of town a few times, while Newsom faces a recall election at least in part because of his unpretentious, non-social distancing dinner at a posh Wine restaurant. Country.

All three had their respective constituents under orders to cover their faces in these cases. The state follows a face covering order that Newsom has implemented through Tuesday.

When caught breaking their own rules, they implicitly acknowledge that their rules are unnecessary and that adults can make decisions about their own health and safety.

Ironically, however, these incidents of hierarchical hypocrisy have not caused these politicians to change their behavior.

Newsom says he only took off his mask at the AFC Championship for a snap with Lakers legend Magic Johnson, although other photos show him not wearing a mask at other times.

Garcetti, meanwhile, says he just holds his breath, which shows how little he thinks about the public.

As the adult masking regulations are gone, the requirement for students to wear masks remains – although children are always at a much lower risk of serious illness than adults.

In other words, everyday Californians have to follow rules that powerful politicians who created the rules don’t have to. And children, who are at the lowest risk of serious infections, suffer the most to satisfy the most paranoid of us.

This is beyond imitation. The state’s top Democrats prove time and time again that most of these rules are at least arbitrary.

With the latest wave of retreats, widespread vaccinations, and ease of use of boosters, it’s time to drop the arbitrary rules and trust people to make their own choices.
