Duck seasons are coming to an end

Duck hunting season in the South Zone ends at dusk on Thursday, January 20, with the Coastal area (east of the Garden State Parkway) open until dusk on Saturday, January 22.

The Northern Division season ended this past Thursday.

It’s a time of fall for waterfowl farmers, with the more northerly coastal regions producing rich guns, with the central and southern marshes and bays producing, in total. body, fair chance for birds, nothing more.

Sure, there have been some boom days, but not like previous years. Basically, it’s a trade of buffalo-headed ducks, long-tailed ducks (old spoof), and black ducks, with the number of mallards, long-tailed ducks, and shovels. Back fabric is few and far between, with the appearance of men’s goldeneyes, gadgeon, gadwall, redhead and ringnecks added to the bag.

Here’s to hoping the 20-degree Celsius heat explosion expected over the weekend (possibly the only number at night) will push the dangling ducks down further along the coast. A double-edged sword as the water in the boat is steep and the shallower areas of the estuaries inevitably become covered in ice. Breaking the ice to launch is nothing new to the late-season coastal shooter, but at least finding the spot(s) where the birds are landing can be a challenge.

The same goes for lakes and ponds in the southern area. The creeks and rivers, following the flow, can have more water, unable to resist the invitation of the ducks in search of a place to settle.

However, it is well worth the effort for both areas, as there are ducks around and hopefully more will remove it with a short but deep freeze.

Canadian coastal geese season (limited to two) ends January 29; The South Zone (one bird limit) will be closed next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the statewide Bright Goose (snow and blue) season continues until dusk, February 15, with a daily limit of 25.

A special season for Canadian winter geese that offers a limited number of five bird species will run from January 19 to February 15 (half an hour before sunrise to sunset) in two select areas, one north and one south. These areas are marked on page 63 of the Hunt & Trap Notice 2021-2022. Obviously, this hunt is aimed at groups of Canadian residents, not migrants.
