Tonight in the News “Really didn’t expect to beat BTS and Coldplay at the same time”: New embossed Grammy winner Doja Cat and SZA Yes, really didn’t seem ready to pick up their awards from a Las Vegas stage tonight.
The duo won tonight for the song “Kiss Me More” in the category “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance”. Your Answer was a two-part textbook performance in “Wait, what?” beginning with SZA overcoming crutches, high heels, and an exceedingly long train on her dress to climb the Grammy stairs. (God bless the boy(y Gaga for helping her avoid breaking her neck on the approach.) Her first meaningful words: “Girlyou went to the bathroom for about five minutes, are you serious?”
This, addressed to her collaborator Doja Catwho was busy rushing to the stage, and who opened her own address to the assembled august luminaries by saying, “Listen, I’ve never pissed that fast in my entire life.” It’s about as human like a tight moment choreographed award ceremonies like this can produce.
After, you know, settling in, the duo remained deeply emotional in their acceptance speeches. “SZA, you are everything to me,” said Doja CatWHO made headlines late last month hinting that she would soon be leaving the music business. “I’m glad you made it back in time,” SZA replied while thanking her family and fans for the Grammy win.
Then Doja Cat took over the microphone again. “I like to downplay shit,” she admitted, wiping tears from her eyes. “But this is a big deal.” And really, don’t these awards reflect reality? One minute you’re joking about pissing in the middle of one of the greatest moments of your career, the next you’re projecting genuine emotion into the public acclaim for your work. It was oddly moving and sweet and also, yes, very hilarious because seriously, what a time to visit the bathroom!
