Doctor Strange 2’s Captain Marvel Star Breaks Silence Over Surprise Death

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened the door to new variants of characters from across the MCU’s multiverse, though many of them didn’t last long thanks to the Scarlet Witch’s rampage. The victim list included the entire Illuminati Council of Earth-838, ending with Lashana Lynch in her comeback as the new version of Captain Marvel.
She originally played Carol Danvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau in 2019 Captain MarvelLynch got an unexpected chance to return Doctor Strange 2 alongside variants like Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter and John Krasinski’s Reed Richards.
Though this new Captain Marvel lasted longer than the rest of the Illuminati, Wanda’s power was too much for her when the Scarlet Witch brought down a giant statue on Maria to take her out of the equation.

Now for the first time since Doctor Strange 2 was released, Lynch broke her silence on the experience she had in returning to the MCU.
Captain Marvel Star on the death of Doctor Strange 2
In conversation with Empire, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Star Lashana Lynch addressed her return as Captain Marvel for the first time since the film’s release, and even joked about returning on a future outing.
call it “a savage”, Lynch admitted that she hadn’t seen this return in her future before it came to fruition, especially having already known of her fate before it was shown WandaVision:
“It was a wild thing. [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige sent me a message informing me of Maria’s passing. [Characters] spoke of it in WandaVisionwhich I’m glad they did because at least that’s some good context.”
Lynch got a call from a producer Captain Marvel told her about the idea of having characters like hers return through the multiverse, shocked by the news that she would be coming back as a heroine:
“One of the producers of Captain Marvel called me and said they had this idea to put all these new versions of characters back together and they wanted to bring Maria back. I thought, ‘Great, okay, she’s going to be an ancestor.’ ‘No, she will be Captain Marvel.’ It blew me away.”
Reflecting on how insane the experience was to learn about this plot detail on a Zoom call with Hayley Atwell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star even described Maria as one “Super Mom” to the team:
“Hayley, Benedict, Chiwetel, a group of us was on Zoom and we just stared at each other and said, ‘What’s up?!’ I embraced Maria as a “super mom” who had a chance to flourish in this very new but already existing way. It felt like it was meant for her.”
Lynch also spoke about Maria’s death in Doctor Strange 2, which came last in the Scarlet Witch massacre of the Illuminati. She had a funny idea that Maria would come back the same way the King T’Chaka had done at the ancestral level and laughed as she said that her character “could be by a tree somewhere:”
“Listen, I’ve already spoken to Kevin about ancestors. I said, ‘You know Black Panther When is daddy a panther in the tree? Maybe Maria could be by a tree somewhere!’”

Will Maria come back after Doctor Strange 2?
Return of Maria Rambeau Doctor Strange 2 was one of the film’s earliest revealed twists, with Marvel revealing her role in the film during the second full trailer, which debuted during the Super Bowl. And according to Lynch, this return was just as shocking for her as it was for fans watching as it all unfolded, giving her an exciting chance to take on a version of Maria not yet seen in the MCU.
Despite only getting around 10 minutes of screen time, Lynch’s new role as Captain Marvel allowed her to display some incredible powers as she went toe-to-toe with the Scarlet Witch at Illuminati headquarters. It gave fans a taste of just how powerful each version of Captain Marvel is, something Lynch didn’t expect when she returned for her second MCU appearance.
Now, after dying twice in Marvel history, it’s unclear if Lynch will get a third round of action as Carol Danvers’ closest friend. And while the joke about Black Panther’s ancestral plane will get some laughs from readers, an actual comeback would probably be a lot more meaningful than humorous.
Rumor has it that she could play a role next year The wonders, although her presence will no doubt be felt when Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau takes on one of the three main roles in this story. But luckily, by utilizing the multiverse, there’s always a chance for a new story to unfold.
