Disneyland’s popular It’s a Small World ride added two new animatronic dolls to its show on Friday, and both use wheelchairs.
The new additions were unveiled on Friday – the first day of the Disneyland Christmas season and the special holiday overlay that is added annually to the Children’s Singing World Cruise.
This is the first time that small world puppets will be shown in wheelchairs, designed by several groups in collaboration, including a staff group that advocates for disabled staff and visitors.
Keep an eye out for the new puppets in the Latin scene and also in the finale, in addition to the nearly 300 singing and dancing puppets that already make up the attraction.
It’s a Small World opened at Disneyland in 1966 after debuting at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. It still remains one of the park’s most popular rides. The last time new characters were added was in 2009. Officials said they plan to add dolls in wheelchairs to rides at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris in 2023.
In a prepared statement, Disneyland said it had “added improvements to our attractions to reflect a more accurate representation of diversity around the world.”
The holiday season at Disneyland Resort lasts through January 8th and includes giant Christmas trees as well as special ride overlays like the Haunted Mansion, performances and more. The Sleeping Beauty Castle is covered with lights. At Cars Land, visitors will find Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree for the holidays, among others.
It’s a Small World was first revamped for the 1997 holiday season with special lighting and decorations. It features the puppets dancing and singing Christmas carols, as well as the iconic Small World theme song that has become a catchy tune for generations.
It is fully wheelchair accessible, with two boats specially equipped for their use.
