Discussions continue about Fort Wayne Community Schools’ back-to-school times

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – The leaders of Fort Wayne Community Schools held another meeting Thursday to discuss possible changes in start and finish times for their district.

Three tier options were presented, including different school years, and tier 2 seemed to be the most popular. That would be an earlier school start time of 7:20 am

In 2015, it was moved to 9:05 a.m. to help with teenagers’ sleep schedules and bus routes, with students dismissed at 4:10 p.m. But now, Fort Wayne Community Schools director of transportation Renee Dawson says Tier 2 is the best option for her department. It would provide 90 minutes between high school and elementary school.

“It would allow us to transport students between classes for games and stuff like that within the city, and in the afternoon if we got off a little early we would have 90 minutes to get those second graders home,” Dawson said said. “We could recircle and go to sporting events, have activity buses for students and maybe help get students to internships and jobs.”

Dawson says there’s only 40 minutes between stages, which is causing trouble for her department.

“We can’t get the kids from point A to point B safely and efficiently because we have about 40 minutes right now, and 90 minutes would really increase that opportunity for us,” Dawson said.

Here is the schedule of the remaining three meetings:

  • Tuesday, November 15, 6:30 p.m., Snider High School, 4600 Fairlawn Pass
  • Thursday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m., Wayne High School, 9100 Winchester Road
  • Monday, November 28, 1 p.m., North Side High School, 475 E. State Blvd.

The district states on its website that the proposed changes would begin in the 2023-24 school year.
