Dems praise Biden for addressing the immigration crisis and asylum seekers ahead of the US-Mexico border visit

Democratic officials from the United States have hailed President Biden’s recent asylum announcement ahead of his first visit to the southern border on Sunday, which will be the first of his administration.

The announcement included details on how the Biden administration will better manage the influx of asylum seekers, primarily from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. It came ahead of Biden’s visit to the US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas on Sunday.

“Thank you to the Biden-Harris administration for your renewed commitment to addressing immigration with the nuance and resources this issue deserves. We support policies that are fair and reflect our American values,” tweeted Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, DC

“President Biden’s announcement today to expand the humanitarian program to allow more asylum seekers to travel to the United States safely, legally, and in a more controlled manner is an important, positive step in ensuring our federal partners are better equipped to manage this humanitarian crisis. ‘ New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a press release.

He also praised the Biden administration’s “partnership and response to our call for action.”

Biden announced Thursday that migrants will be deported to Mexico effective immediately if they attempt to enter the United States illegally. But he said the US would offer up to 30,000 people a month from those four countries humanitarian parole, a service they could get if they applied online, paid for their flight and found a financial sponsor.

Adams added: “We hope this policy will help better control the influx of asylum seekers arriving at the southern border. At the same time, we still need a long-term and proactive strategy to manage the crisis we are seeing.”

The mayor’s praise comes just days after he specifically called the migrant crisis a “real embarrassment” at a “national level” and said his city was overwhelmed by its impact.

“I believe it is a real embarrassment at the national level and we need to give an appropriate response. We have had conversations about the problems with migrants for decades. This is a national matter. There has to be a national response,” Adams said on WABC’s “Sid & Friends in the Morning.”

Gloria also encouraged the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives to work with Democrats to “pass legislation to fix our broken immigration system!”

Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio, Texas, also praised Biden’s actions.

“In lieu of much-needed Congressional politics [Biden’s] new action humanely tackles influx of asylum seekers entering the US. We will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure San Antonio receives the necessary funding for our local migrant assistance efforts.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago, Illinois added, “We support the President’s announcement today. Additionally, we look forward to continuing to work with the White House, federal executive branch stakeholders and our elected federal delegation to address this ongoing national challenge of asylum seekers.”

Many of these cities were the recipients of thousands of migrants who were transported on buses from Texas, Arizona and Florida to facilitate local migrant facilities.

The mayor of New York City specifically complained about the influx of migrants, saying during the interview that a “rush” of migrants had an impact “on the quality of life in New York.”

“El Paso shouldn’t go through this. Chicago shouldn’t be going through this. Houston, Washington, New York, no city should have to make a decision about whether they’re going to care for their citizens, especially when they come out of Covid or when they’re dealing with an onslaught of migrants and asylum seekers,” he said.
