Frequent MSNBC guest and The Nation correspondent Elie Mystal berated the Republican Party as “locusts” that thrive on “affliction” on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” on Friday.
Before Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was successfully elected Speaker of the House later that evening, Mystal discussed ongoing voting procedures in the US House of Representatives. Regarding the Republican Party’s internal struggle to secure position despite the majority, Mystal concluded that the entire GOP cares less about governing than about destroying.
“Republicans don’t want to rule. Dysfunction is a victory condition for the Republican Party. It’s the Democrats who want things. Republicans don’t want things. The fact that government can’t function, the fact that this set of rules makes it almost impossible for the Speaker to exercise any real power, that’s okay with Republicans,” Mystal said.
“We’re in a situation where the Democrats are basically like Bill Paxton [sic] on ‘Independence Day’ when he asked the aliens, ‘What should we do?’ And the aliens say, ‘Die!’ To the right? That’s what — they’re locusts and they feed on dysfunction and suffering,” he continued, mistaking actor Paxton for Bill Pullman, who played the president in the sci-fi film.
Hayes didn’t push back on Mystal’s dehumanizing language, but instead brought up McCarthy’s ties to K Street lobby groups and how those lobbyists “want things.”
THE REPUBLICANS’ FIGHT FOR THE SPEAKERSHIP OF THE HOUSE HAS BECAME “LONG FUTURE”: REP. SCALE
“Kevin McCarthy – and that’s the criticism from this rogue committee that’s correct – he’s a creature of K Street. He’s wired downtown. That’s why he is where he is. These people want stuff and they want stuff to come through,” Hayes replied.
Mystal said, “Yes, but the people who are in control right now — the people who Kevin McCarthy sold his soul to get this hammer don’t want anything.”
“I totally agree,” Hayes said.
Mystal was one of many Liberal figures who poked fun at the ongoing election for House Speaker since the first vote began Tuesday and no candidate received the 218 votes needed to win the position.
“Republicans learning that Republicans are unwilling to govern and have an endless supply of complaints is pretty funny. I hope all those ‘Democrats should be reaching down the aisle’ will watch and realize how stupid you all have been sounding for so long,” Mystal tweeted Wednesday.
MSNBC ANALYST PANIC ABOUT REPUBLICANS FEDERAL INVESTIGATIONS: “THE INSURRECTION PLATFORM”
McCarthy eventually won the votes necessary to become Speaker of the House of Representatives after 15 ballots early Saturday morning.
In November, ABC’s The View featured similar comments equating Republicans with vermin when co-host Sunny Hostin compared women in the GOP to roaches.
“What also surprises me is the abortion issue. I read a poll just yesterday that white suburban Republican women will now vote for Republicans,” Hostin said. “It’s almost like cockroaches voting for Raid [roach spray]to the right?”

Hostin defended her comments days later, accusing others of “skewing her words” after being heavily criticized.
