Despite the casting chaos surrounding a certain Hannah John-Kamen, thunderbolts remains one of the most anticipated projects in the entire Multiverse saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if for no other reason than that it will flip the script of what we usually expect the MCU to do if a group of anti-heroes do the will of the Devil dishing out Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is one way to grab the attention of those suffering from Marvel fatigue.
The Black Ops answer to the Avengers eponymous team consists of Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Red Guardian (David harbor), with the aforementioned John-Kamen’s Ghost already announced as part of the cast, but apparently not on the official cast list as of late.
Ghost or no Ghost, fans will no doubt be preparing for Harbour’s Red Guardian to steal the show like he did alongside Pugh’s Yelena in 2021 Black widownot least because of his humorous, awkward manner.
While Red Guardian’s daughter Yelena will certainly be closest in film, she’s not the actor’s fan favorite behind Russia’s Captain America equivalent. In an interview with The Playlist, Harbor Russells named John Walker as the teammate who most intrigues him, noting the actor’s wildly impressive performance The Falcon and the Winter Soldieras well as daydreams about the character’s dynamic with Red Guardian as the “darker” Captain America.
“In terms of the new guys, I can say I really love what Wyatt Russell has done. And I think just the fact of a really dark Captain America what that means in terms of his relationship with Red Guardian and what that spark will be like. You know, Red Guardian is just a foil for Captain America. He is obsessed with Captain America. And this guy, even though Mackie is the real Captain America, Wyatt is a version of this patriotic thing that’s darker. And so I think as a Red Guardian I’m very interested in seeing where that goes.”
We hope audiences have trouble (the good way) picking a favorite Thunderbolts member in 2024. Following Marvel’s wet fart of a Phase Five opener Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, thunderbolts and the rest of the multiverse saga will have their work cut out for them.
thunderbolts hits theaters on July 26, 2024.
