Daily Mail columnist Petronella Wyatt said “Nazis were not fascists” and was sent to school for the next year

Poke Stick. Updated March 10, 2023
To the world of Petronella Wyatt who – just in case you don’t know her – is a former deputy editor of The Spectator, a columnist for the Spectator, Mail and Telegraph and a commentator for GB News.
you have the idea
We’re mentioning her because, like the rest of Twitter, she has spoken out about Gary Lineker and all.
I don’t support @SuellaBraverman But I wish, and I’m not speaking of Lineker, that people would stop using the words “Nazi” and “Fascist” in a contemporary context. It’s as ridiculous as accusing people of being “Roundheads”, “Whigs” or “Luddites”.

But it’s not that tweet that got her all the attention, it was the follow-up.
And we really didn’t see that coming.
Her tweet sparked countless replies as you can imagine, and here are just a few of them (and how Wyatt responded to compensate).
Some days I wonder why Britain is in such a mess and then I remember you spouting ridiculous monologues.

I’m flattered that you attach such importance to me.
— Petronella Wyatt (@PetronellaWyatt) March 9, 2023
Oh fuck off, Petronella. Just as the Democratic Republic of North Korea is democratic.
— India Willoughby (@IndiaWilloughby) March 9, 2023
By the way, India, I thought you were a woman who wouldn’t have to reduce to saying f-off on Twitter.

Sometimes it’s the only word that fits.

Did you miss the Weimar Republic module during your history studies at UCL?
— Donkey 235 (@donkey235) March 9, 2023
Did you miss the etiquette module while studying nothing? My mother’s family lived under the Nazi occupation and suffered a lot from it, so I think I know more about it than you do.
— Petronella Wyatt (@PetronellaWyatt) March 9, 2023
Do not do that. They were fascists.
— Natalie (@Natalie_in_HH) March 9, 2023
That’s not what they called themselves. Mussolini called himself a “fascist”. However, the National Socialist form of National Socialism does not correspond to our idea of socialism, and it only applied to “Aryans”.
— Petronella Wyatt (@PetronellaWyatt) March 9, 2023
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is not really democratic.
Professors Ian Kershaw and Richard Evans – both world-renowned experts – are aware that neither the party nor Hitler can be called socialists.
The name was adopted to gain support. Nothing more.
— John O’Shea (@politicalhackuk) March 9, 2023
In case she still wasn’t convinced, there was that, too.
That’s shameful.
Everyone from the Encyclopaedia Britannica to the Webster Dictionary to the Holocaust Museum says Nazis are fascists.
You know who didn’t say Nazis were fascists? Nazis.
Doesn’t it bother you to repeat their propaganda?
— Russ Jones (@RussInCheshire) March 9, 2023
And the.
Hello 👋 I wrote a proper book about fascists and I am pretty sure that fascist Germany was a fascist state run by a fascist party
— dr Ian Garner (@irgarner) March 9, 2023
And all of that!
Fred West would have preferred the title “amateur landscaper,” but he was still a killer.

You must have been blown away when you discovered that buffalo wings are not made from buffalo.

She will be absolutely amazed by Steel Magnolias. “When will we see the metal flowers?!?!?!” she will scream.
— Sooz Kempner🐀 (@SoozUK) March 9, 2023
It will blow this person’s mind when they hear about seahorses
— Joe Kassabian (@jkass99) March 9, 2023
Petronella Wyatt should be ashamed to rehash that myth. The Nazis were fascists.
They called themselves “National Socialists” because they were also propagandists.
Like the way our government calls itself “conservatives” while preserving nothing of value.
— Russ Jones (@RussInCheshire) March 9, 2023
People who think Nazis of World War II had Nazis in them also think:
Hamburgers have ham in them.
Corned beef contains corn.
Horseradish had horses in it.
Hot dogs have dogs in them.
Eggplants contain eggs.
(It doesn’t matter what you call something.)

*stares into the historian*
— Thomas Lecaque (@tlecaque) March 9, 2023
It’s a whoop from me
— Mollie Goodfellow (@hansmollman) March 9, 2023
The final word – well, almost – to Wyatt herself for suggesting that we all go and read this book.
Why not read the history of Nazi Germany by a reputable historian instead of lazily surfing the internet as usual? I suggest you start with The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer. If you have read it, I might consider discussing it with you.

So someone did it and it’s perfect.
