Crime in Houston: Decaying body wrapped in blankets found in Redford Apartments’ closet

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — Housing managers ready to evict Monday found something horrific: a body wrapped in blankets decomposing in a cloakroom.

Houston police confirmed their investigation into the discovery at the sprawling Redford Apartments on the 1300 block of Redford Street near Edgebrook Drive and the Gulf Freeway.

Eyewitness News learned that the police department officially called it a suspicious death, as the body was badly decomposed with no obvious signs of how the person died.

Police said the complex had many vacant apartments, including the one where the body was located. Squatters are believed to be there, which eventually led to the discovery in a cloakroom around 5:30pm

“Management at this apartment complex has served an eviction notice on 407A. As they approached the door, they noticed a strong odor and the presence of flies. So they backed off and called the police,” HPD Homicide Det. said Lance Osborn. “Whenever the Clear Lake patrol arrived, they made the same observations. Due to the difficult circumstances, they made their way to the apartment, where they were able to locate the deceased victim very well in one of the cupboards.”

Because the body was buried in both blankets and decay, sex and race weren’t obvious, Osborn said. An autopsy will reveal identifiers as well as the manner and cause of death.

Anyone with information is urged to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
