Warning: The following article contains spoilers for ‘The last of us’ Episode six, ‘Kin’.

Boy Boy. Music has established itself as a central driver of the emotions we’ve collectively felt while watching HBO series over the past six weeks The last of us, but we don’t think anything could have hit us as hard as the conclusion of this week’s episode.

If you remember, and of course you do, episode one ended with Joel, Ellie and Tess (RIP) exiting the Boston quarantine zone to the tune of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again.” On the show’s official companion podcast, showrunner Craig Mazin teased that we’d hear this song again in a very different context.

Well this week we discovered that context and it was soul crushing. After Joel finds himself in a scuffle at the university rumored to be a Firefly base, he ends up being stabbed. While he and Ellie manage to escape, our leader loses too much blood and falls off his horse.

Ellie desperately tries to wake him up as her most debilitating fear of being left alone sets in. The camera pans and zooms away, and we hear Depeche Mode’s lyrics once more – albeit in a much darker way. This is after Bill and Frank and Henry and Sam, who all hit hard in their own way. Remind us why we’re agonizing over this show again?

To make matters even more bittersweet, Mazin revealed on the podcast’s sixth episode that it was actually his daughter, Jessica Mazin, who sang the haunting rendition. We’re hoping to get an official release so we can weep ugly as we worry about Joel’s fate.

We’ll have all the answers when The last of us returns next Sunday for a new episode on HBO Max.
