CPS announces new budget of USD 9.5 billion

CHICAGO — The Chicago Public Schools released their proposed budget for the 2022-2023 school year on Tuesday.

The new $9.5 billion budget proposal reflects an 8% increase in school funding per student.

CPS said the priorities are more academic and mental health support, safety resources and professional development for educators.

The district will continue to draw on its $2.8 billion allocation of federal COVID relief funds. More than $700 million of that is planned for next year for early childhood programs, participation scholarships, after-school programs and mental health support, among others.

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said in a statement, “We are strategically investing this fud and laying a new foundation for success to ensure schools have the resources and capacity to advance every student.”

The 2023 budget also includes $8 million for so-called critical safety equipment, up $6 million from the previous year.

And CPS plans to add more than 500 teachers and 700 school assistants to its payroll of more than 40,000 employees.

The budget would fund schools from July 1 this year to June next year.

CPS will host budget hearings at 42 W. Madison St. on Monday, June 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, June 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m .

The Capital Planning Hearings are also public and take place virtually. The dates are as follows:

• Wednesday, June 15, 2022, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m

• Thursday, June 16, 2022, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m

• Friday, June 17, 2022, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m
