CPD: Attempted robbery suspect shot dead, killed in South Shore supermarket; witness critical

CHICAGO — A suspect in the attempted robbery was shot dead at a South Shore supermarket Friday night, and a witness is in critical condition.

Around 6:20 p.m., Chicago police said a suspect entered the Elbarakah Super Market, located on the 2600 block of East 73rd Street, and produced a handgun while attempting to rob the store.

Around the same time, a 64-year-old witness with valid FOID identification shot the suspect in the chest. The suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, fired back, shooting the 64-year-old man in the chest and back.

The witness was transported to the University of Chicago in critical condition.

CPD said three handguns were recovered from the scene. It is not known how many customers were in the store at the time of the shooting.
