Columbus Day 2022: What is closed?

(WHNT) – Monday is Columbus Day and while some businesses and services are suspended for the day, for others it is business as usual.
Columbus Day in the United States is meant to honor the legacy of the man credited with discovering the New World, although many are transitioning to celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, a holiday meant to honor Native American culture and history.
Both bank holidays are celebrated on the second Monday in October and while some schools and businesses will operate as usual, others will not.
mail delivery
Post offices will be closed on October 10th, meaning mail and packages will not be delivered by the United States Postal Service.
Packages sent via most FedEx services will continue to be delivered, along with UPS pickup and delivery services, which will continue throughout the holidays.
banks
As the Federal Reserve commemorates Columbus Day, most banks will close on Monday. Some may still choose to open specific locations, so call to check before heading to your local branch.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are open.
government offices
All federal offices will be closed, but some at the state government level may remain open. While some schools are in session, it’s best to check with your local county.
retail trade
Almost all restaurants, theaters, and shopping malls are open for normal business hours on Monday, unless a specific location has decided to celebrate Columbus Day. However, most libraries will be closed.
National parks will be open, along with grocery and department stores.
Rubbish and recycling collection may operate on a different schedule, so it’s best to check with your supplier.
The next federal holiday is Veterans Day on November 11th.
