College dormitories are typical hotbeds for harmless pranks; bThings have taken a dark, misogynist turn at a college in Spain. Earlier this week, more than 100 students from Colegio Mayor Elías Ahúja — an all-male college that’s part of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid — hosted a yearbook Mass calling event aimed at those living in the Colegio Mayor Santa Mónica female-only dormitory across the street. And because Spain forbidden catcalling In an attempt to protect women’s sexual rights last May, these boys face even greater repercussions.

in one Twitter video To document the incident, a number of people can be seen gathered around a lighted window yelling, “Horns, come out of your burrows like rabbits. You are fucking nymphomaniacs! I promise you guys will fuck everyone in the bullfight! Go Ahúja!” Then, in rapid coordination, the remaining windows begin to light up, one by one, and throngs of boys hoot in each. Amidst the screaming, some screams can be heard in the background.

Getting a call from just one person is scary enough — imagine having a building full of guys verbally harassing you across the street from where you live.

Unfortunately, the vocals are reportedly part of a “ritual of machismo‘ which, according to a report, takes place at the beginning of each academic year El Publico, a Spanish news agency. TikToks from 2021 show how the “song” is part of the clouding process for newcomers, a form of indoctrination. The University did not answer to the same incident last year.

But this year the government of Elías Ahúja published one Instagram statement to this topic. In it, the university describes the action as “unacceptable” and explains that some colleagues even see what was said as “incomprehensible and inadmissible in society”. At least one student – the so-called “ringleader” of the chant – was already there expelled for the incident, and the remaining students must take “courses to raise awareness of gender equality”. The school’s annual bullfight (cape) referenced in the chant was also suspended.

“This is an obvious sign that sex education is necessary and that institutions must stop legitimizing sexist discourses that deny violence and equal rights for women,” Irene Montero, Spain’s Minister for Gender Equality, told the media.

The Spanish government, which has taken legislative steps to protect women in recent years, has also spoken out to condemn the young men’s actions. Corresponding VicePrime Minister Pedro Sanchez told reporters that politicians and the media “must send out a unified and unified message of opposition to these.” Machista Behaviors that are inexplicable, unjustifiable and downright repulsive. And that we do not condone these behaviors, they do not reflect the majority of Spanish society.” In March 2020, the government passed a “Yes means yes” Consent Act after a special violent gang rape and a subsequent one year-long campaign.

Universities in the US and around the world have long struggled against the unrelenting pervasiveness of rape culture on their campuses, much of which remains unchecked. And changes can only come from the universities themselves. We are excited to see what will happen next year.
