China Rocket: Space debris found in rural India, likely from ‘China Rocket’

A large metal ring and bullet that villagers in rural western India said fell from the sky over the weekend could have come from a Chinese rocket launched into space last year, officials told local media.

The metal ring – reportedly two to three meters (6.5 to 10 feet) in diameter and weighing over 40 kilograms (90 pounds) – was discovered late Saturday in a village field in Maharashtra state, district collector Ajay Gulhane told Press Trust of India .

“We were preparing for a community festival when the sky was lit up by the red disc that fell with a bang on an open lot in the village,” an unnamed woman in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district told The Times of India.

“People ran to her house for fear of an explosion and stayed inside for almost half an hour.”

Another object – a large metal ball about half a meter in diameter – fell in another village in the district, Gulhane told PTI.

“It was collected for examination. We had sent (lower-level officials) to every village in the district to find out if there were any other pieces of objects scattered around.”

There were no reports of injuries or structural damage.

An official with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) told the Times that the timing of the objects’ arrival on Saturday “closest matched re-entry times for debris from a Chinese rocket launched in February 2021.”

“If rocket bodies survive re-entry into the atmosphere, the rocket parts such as nozzles, rings and tanks can impact the earth,” another ISRO official told the newspaper.

Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics space observer Jonathan McDowell tweeted that the ring matches a piece of the Chinese Long March 3B rocket.

Objects generate immense amounts of heat and friction as they enter the atmosphere, which can cause them to burn up and disintegrate, but larger objects may not be completely destroyed.

Your wreck can land on the planet’s surface, causing damage and casualties, although this risk is small.

In 2020, debris from another Chinese Long March missile fell on villages in Ivory Coast, causing structural damage but no injuries or deaths.
