Chargers earn fifth playoff seed to meet Jaguars – Orange County Register

DENVER — The Chargers clinched fifth-place finish in the AFC wildcard playoffs and a date with the fourth-seeded Jacksonville Jaguars, and they did it without lifting a finger against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ 27-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens secured them the win.

The NFL was expected to announce times and dates for the wildcard weekend later on Sunday. The Chargers face the Jaguars either on Saturday, Sunday or Monday in Jacksonville. Jacksonville beat the Chargers 38-10 in an injury-ridden game on September 25 at SoFi Stadium.

In that game, edge rusher Joey Bosa injured his groin and sat out the next 12 before returning in the Chargers’ win over the Rams last Sunday. Wide receiver Jalen Guyton suffered a season-ending knee injury and left tackle Rashawn Slater tore his biceps tendon.

The Chargers (10-6) secured their first playoff spot since the 2018 season with a Dec. 26 win over the Indianapolis Colts and started Sunday knowing they would be either No. 5 or No. 6 .

They won four straight before playing the Broncos on Sunday, which turned into an opportunity to play some of their backups after Cincinnati beat Baltimore.

Jacksonville (9-8) secured fourth place in the AFC South with a win over the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, the Jaguars’ fifth straight win after a five-game losing streak earlier in the season. Only five teams in league history had such streaks and made the playoffs.
