Carli Lloyd says she ‘hated’ US women’s national team culture.

US women’s soccer legend Carli Lloyd lashed out at former teammates in a series of interviews this week, saying she “hates” the “culture” of the multi-year Powerhouse program.

Lloyd, a two-time gold medalist and a member of two World Cup-winning teams, told her former teammate Hope Solo that she’s struggled to enjoy gaming in recent years.

“It’s been really tough and challenging to play these last seven years. To be honest, I hated it,” Lloyd said on the Hope Solo Speaks podcast aired on Wednesday.

“It wasn’t fun going in. It was really just out of love for the game, for me. I wanted to win and help the team, but the culture within the team was the worst I’ve ever seen.”

Lloyd made similar comments earlier in the week Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union Podcast said that there was a noticeable change in the program after winning the 2015 World Cup.

“What we’ve had in recent years wasn’t a good culture and the mentality changed and it got toxic,” she said to Lalas. “It was not good.”

When asked what changed after 2015, Lloyd made vague accusations of selfishness. She didn’t call anyone by name.

“I’ve just seen a change in the way people think,” she said. “It was more about what can I do to build my brand off the field? What can I do to get an endorsement deal and less about what we have to do when we step between those lines.”

But the women’s team’s on-field results seem to refute Lloyd’s post-2015 criticism.

Team USA failed to win a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympicsfell to Sweden in a dramatic quarter-final shootout.

But then the American women bounced back to win the World Cup in 2019 and before clinching bronze in Tokyo last year. she eliminated from the national team A short time later.

Lalas defended Lloyd’s right to speak her mind, but lamented bitter internal infighting within US soccer.

“I know @CarliLloyd is a grown woman and she can take to say some provocative things about @USWNT. But American football… we eat our own.” Lalas tweeted Thursday.

Lloyd is best known for scoring three goals in the first 16 minutes of America’s win Japan in the 2015 World Cup final.

Debates about who is the best player in the history of US women’s soccer mostly revolve around Lloyd, Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.
