By-election review begins next week by Gaines twp. district 8

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Kent County clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons will conduct a by-election audit of Gaines Township Precinct 8.

This audit comes after charges were brought against James Donald Holkeboer for allegedly tampering with an electronic ballot book computer used in the primary school in August 2022. If convicted, he faces up to nine years in prison and a $6,000 fine.

Holkeboer allegedly plugged in the USB after the files in the electronic ballot book had already been stored on the district’s authorized, encrypted system device, which, as usual, had been sealed in a certified container.

“During this incident no impact Regarding the election, Kent County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Posthumus Lyons is conducting a post-election audit in Gaines Township, District 8, including a hand count of paper ballots to confirm the results and put voters’ minds at ease,” it said in a press release.

The post-election exam begins on Tuesday and continues until its conclusion.
