Buzz on Shivpal-BJP ‘bonhomie’ in UP, Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle could get Deputy Speaker post

Amid reports of growing bonhomie between Shivpal Yadav, the President of the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia, and the BJP, there is speculation that he could become Deputy Speaker in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly with the backing of the ruling party.

“Speculations like this do the rounds. The sky knows no bounds, neither does politics. The door of opportunity is never closed in politics,” Deepak Mishra, spokesman for the PSPL, told PTI.

Shivpal Yadav launched his own party in 2019 after a falling out with his nephew, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav. But ahead of the recent general election, the two were back together and Shivpal Yadav won against Jaswantnagar by an SP ticket.

Following the election results, tensions seemed to have risen again between the two as the BJP returned to power for a second consecutive term.

The PSPL spokesman recalled Shivpal Yadav’s experience as a legislator. “If the MLAs give him this responsibility, it will increase the dignity of the assembly,” Mishra said.

When asked why Yadav is eyeing the post of deputy spokesman, he said: “What post is left for him now? He cannot become speaker. Nor can he become Speaker of the House of Representatives or leader of the opposition.”

Mishra said there had been no official proposal to elect the PSPL leader to the post of deputy spokesman. “But if such a proposal comes, Shivpal Yadav will be the first choice of the ruling party and the opposition,” he added.

Asked about the possibility, UP Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Jaswant Singh Saini said: “I have no information on this.”

There was earlier speculation that Yadav would be sent to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP and his son Aditya Yadav would take over from the seat he had vacated in the Jaswantnagar Assembly.

In October 2021, BJP-backed SP rebel Nitin Agarwal was elected Deputy Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly.

In recent days there have been signs of tension within the opposition coalition led by Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav has hinted that he is leaning towards the BJP.

He has met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and started following Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and former Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma on Twitter.

The rift between Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav has widened after the uncle was not invited to a meeting of the newly elected SP MLAs on March 26. Shivpal Yadav then skipped an opposition alliance meeting chaired by Akhilesh Yadav.

He later went to CM’s apartment here and fueled speculation that he might switch sides.

Another member of the Yadav family has already crossed over. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav joined the BJP ahead of the general election.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav met his father, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, in New Delhi on Saturday. But it is not known what happened between them. Buzz on Shivpal-BJP ‘bonhomie’ in UP, Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle could get Deputy Speaker post
