Buie, Audige help Northwestern beat No. 1 Purdue 64-58

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Boo Buie had 26 points on Sunday, Chase Audige had 15 and Northwestern beat No. 1 Purdue 64-58 on Sunday.

Led by his experienced backcourt, Northwestern (18-7, 9-5 Big Ten) added a signature win to their bid for the school’s second NCAA tournament appearance. The Wildcats earned their first win in 19 games against the No. 1 team on the AP poll.

Zach Edey had 24 points and eight rebounds for Purdue (23-3, 12-3), who had 11 consecutive wins against Northwestern. Braden Smith finished the 1v7 shooting with 10 points.

Edey’s hook shot put Purdue 55-47 ahead with 3:52 left. But Northwestern finished the game on a 17-3 run.

Audige scored 10 points in the dazzling finish. He finally gave the Wildcats the lead when he made a 3-pointer after a turnover from Edey.

Brooks Barnhizer had a fast break layup and Buie fouled twice in the last minute to help Northwestern hold. When it was over, the noisy student section stormed the pitch to celebrate with the team.

Purdue shot just 28.6% (6 to 21) from the field in the second half. It has also committed 13 of its 16 turnovers in the last 20 minutes.

Ethan Morton and Mason Gillis each made a 3-pointer to help Purdue open a 26-16 lead with 9:19 in the first half. But Buie converted a drive lay-up in the final seconds, cutting the Boilermakers’ lead to 37-30 at the break.

Purdue: The collapse on the track was a disturbing development. The Boilermakers also lost to Indiana last weekend.

Northwestern: Audige improved from a slow start and gave the Wildcats a big boost.

Purdue visits Maryland on Thursday evening. The Boilermakers beat the Terrapins 58-55 on January 22 at Mackey Arena.

Northwestern hosted No. 18 Indiana on Wednesday night. The Wildcats led the Hoosiers 84-83 on Jan. 8.
