Bring the 1966 Companies Act to Parliament if you want an amendment: Zahid

SHAH ALAM: The Societies Act 1966 (Act 832) is a law passed by Parliament and if there are parties that want an amendment, the matter should be raised in Parliament, Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said (Picture).

“If there is a difference of opinion, you have to look back to the Societies Act 1966. It is a law approved by Parliament. So we return it to Parliament if we want the law to be changed,” he told the media here yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid said this to comment on the video clip of former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin confronting Home Secretary Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Umno’s decision under Section 70 of the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832) on the election of the party .

On Umno’s next direction, Ahmad Zahid expects that the new leadership lineup of the party that is elected will work with him to implement the party’s new direction.

Ahmad Zahid said the direction, which has 21 steps, will be announced and implemented after the party’s March 18 election.

“We hope that Umno has no more thorns in his flesh. Hopefully everyone will come together as one team,” he said.

Regarding cooperation with other parties in view of the state elections, the deputy prime minister said that starting yesterday, Umno will hold internal talks in each participating state for three days.

The six states that will hold state elections this year are Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Selangor, Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah. –Bernama
