GARDEN GROVE — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Garden Grove on Sunday and the driver was arrested after fleeing the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.
The victim, identified only as a 53-year-old passer-by, was hit at around 1:55 a.m. at around 1:55 a.m. at the 12000 block of Brookhurst Street, near Chapman Avenue. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. Royce Wimmer.
His name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver was identified as 26-year-old Alexis Lopez, from Brea, Wimmer said. Police said he fled the scene, but an officer was in the area and was able to locate Lopez, who was pulled over and reportedly showed signs of impairment. He was arrested and sentenced to the Orange County Jail on suspicion of drunk driving, hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter while intoxicated.
The vehicle believed to be involved was a white 2020 Toyota Tacoma, police said.
