Blair Cobbs decided to keep hitting even after being stopped by Alexis Rocha on Saturday night, landing a couple of light body punches on the referee.
The previously undefeated American suffered his first professional loss by knockout in the ninth round.
Cobbs gave a solid account of himself but was outclassed by Rocha throughout the competition.
As they neared the final steps, Rocha took control.
On round eight of the ten-runner, he knocked out Cobbs, who just managed to get to his feet and survived to the bell.
He wouldn’t last much longer, however, when referee Rudy Barragan stepped in to separate them and end the fight in round nine.
Cobbs kept swinging anyway and tagged the referee with a couple of soft belly punches.
The two biggest names in welterweight came together to celebrate the loss of Cobbs.
The loud-mouthed contender had previously called out both Errol Spence and Terence Crawford, trash-talking the pair in the process.
Spence responded by tweeting, “Rocha beats red ass by five heartbeats.”
When the break was confirmed, he added, “Put his ass in the diiiiirrrrrt.”
Crawford tweeted, “All the talk he was making smh just looked stupid.”
