The manga world was rocked last May when it was announced that Kentaro Miura, bestselling author and author of berserkHe had died of an acute aortic dissection, leaving his incredibly dark magnum opus unfinished. But at least the series many American fans will finally get a chance to see Miura’s final work on the series when dark horse publishes the 41st volume later that year.
Attempting to summarize even the smallest part of the epic that Miura began many times in 1989 is a mistake. Suffice it to say that it stars a swordsman named Guts who joins The Band of the Hawk mercenary group falls in love with another mercenary named Casca and then begins shedding an immense amount of blood over Miura’s incredible artwork. Here is Dark Horse’s official synopsis for the volume:
“Though Casca has been freed from her mind prison, she cannot escape memories of the horrors she witnessed. And nothing evokes those harrowing memories like Guts, the black swordsman who experienced the same terror in his relentless quest to cure Casca. But could the reappearance of a strange, mute boy be the key to bringing peace to Casca’s soul?”
the 40th and latest volume of berserk was released on September 25, 2019 in the US and a full year earlier in Japan. Miura was notorious for taking long hiatuses (only eight volumes have been released since 2010). Still, berserk has always been one of the best-selling manga in the world, selling more than 50 million copies.
Volume 41 will arrive in America on November 9th in comic book stores and in regular bookstores on November 22nd, and comes with a two-sided color poster. How to proceed, the editors of cub, the bi-monthly anthology that has been publishing the manga since 1992, said last year that they were still weighing their options on what to do with the series after Miura’s death. So for the foreseeable future berserk ends here.
