Beautify your post-winter yard with four inexpensive gardening hacks

If your garden looks lost after winter, maybe it’s time for new plants.
But don’t waste your money on the most beautiful flowers in the garden center.
Instead, get inspired by these value buys that will spice up your patch for years to come.
ALL-ROUND COLOR: Pretty annuals will perk up a tired bed, but only for one season.
Instead, opt for perennials that will beautify your garden year after year.
Lee Burkhill from gardenninja.co.uk says: “Some of the best flowers are perennials, which have a long flowering window but are also slug-resistant, like geraniums and gems. Easy to divide and care for, these plants can be shared with neighbors or quickly fill up your beds without having to spend large sums of money.”
ACCUMULATE: Shrubs may be expensive, but they pay for themselves in the long run as they last for many years.
An inexpensive alternative are evergreen Heben that bloom in summer.
Lee loves to mix up no-fuss grasses in borders to fill them up and add a bit of movement.
He says: “Carex, Stipa and Acorus are pest-proof super grasses, even for small gardens.”
COST-SAVING SHOWSTOPPERS: Are you looking for a plant that has an immediate effect and grows quickly? Phormium looks great in sunny borders.
Described by the Royal Horticultural Society as “undemanding, exotic looking evergreens”, they make a stunning focal point.
Sage is another option.
They give you flowers all summer long and are a magnet for bees and butterflies.
ALWAYS GENTLE: Some plants need less care than others.
Lavender, thyme, oregano and geraniums require little water.
Buy them as young plants or seeds and place them in large pots to give them plenty of room to grow.
