Baytown shooting: Ron Welch suspected of two more murders days after officers opened fire on him

BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) — A body count in a shooting spree imposed on a Baytown man who police shot dead added two more victims, investigators said Monday.

Baytown Police believe Ron Welch, 33, was responsible for the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in an oil field near Causeway Road and Evergreen on Sunday afternoon. While a press release identified Welch as the “perpetrator” in these deaths, police did not disclose the connection or time of death of these victims.

The same press release said the oilfield bodies were linked to a series of shootings that took place miles apart last Wednesday night.

At around 6:30 p.m. on October 5, officers responded to a call from two people who had been shot dead in a car — a man and a woman — on Tri City Beach Road, near Evergreen Road.

The male victim of that shooting died at the scene, while the woman survived, police said.

Baytown police then received a second call from a shooting at the Bay Oaks Harbor Trailer Park, where another man and woman were shot, a few houses down from Welch.

The man was flown to the hospital, where he later died.

The injuries to the second woman are not life-threatening, officials said.

Shortly after the second shooting, witnesses told officers they saw Welch backing up toward the first scene on Tri City Beach Road.

When Welch arrived, police said he confronted officers. That’s when the officers shot Welch and killed him.

Baytown Police Chief John Stringer said officers were “forced to surrender their guns.”

Police believe all four people allegedly shot by Welch that night were his neighbors at the Bay Oaks Harbor Trailer Park, although the motive for the shooting was unclear.

Last Wednesday’s two victims were identified as Bryan Gradney and George Keene.

The identities of the last two victims were not immediately released.
