Bayern’s season “directed against PSG,” says coach Nagelsmann

BERLIN: Julian Nagelsmann believes Bayern Munich’s season will be measured by their performance at home against Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s Champions League round of 16.

After his side returned to the Bundesliga summit with a 2-1 win in Stuttgart, Nagelsmann said he hoped the “manner and style” of the game was more important than the result.

“For me, the type and the style count. The result may depend on a few things – and we have the better chances (being 1-0 up from the first leg) – but the way we play is how the season is viewed,” said the Bayern coach.

Bayern are currently on a streak of 10 consecutive Bundesliga titles but their success means results in Europe in the Bavarian capital matter.

Speaking to German broadcaster Sky, Nagelsmann explained what he said to the team as he locked the dressing room doors after the win.

“I told them that we have a very important game on Wednesday and that we have to bring our intensity.

“They are a very difficult team to beat – they are among the best teams in Europe.”

Bayern striker veteran Thomas Müller told Sky that the close game against Stuttgart, who was threatened with relegation, was the perfect preparation for the decisive duel with the French champions on Wednesday.

“It’s no surprise that a Bundesliga game can be so close. It will be like that from the start on Wednesday.”
