Bass Road section closed for 420 days; how to handle it

ALLEN COUNTY, Indiana (WANE) – 420 days.

That’s how long it will take to complete the $7.1 million road upgrade to Bass Road from the water tower half a mile west — and then on to Scott Road once it’s tendered.

Beginning Monday, the county will close Bass Road from Scott Road to Hadley Road – until December 1, 2023.

Drivers and residents in three housing developments closer to Scott Road — Westcott Ridge, Brenton Glens and Sycamore Lakes — will be required to exit west on Scott Road, said Margaret Hershberger, project manager.

Travelers heading home on Hillegas should take the Illinois Road to Scott Road to avoid frustration.

Monday is the official day for the road closure. The road was clear on Friday, but at least two large piles were staged to get the project started.

The project, which is 20% county funded and the rest federally funded, is truly a bridge project, Hershberger said, with the 500-foot bridge beginning roughly where the large water tower is. It will be one of the largest bridges in the district.

“This area has historically been prone to flooding. It was also kind of a peat bog and a swampy area, so we’re going to fix a lot of the problems we’ve had with flooding, freezing and thawing over the seasons,” Hershberger said

When the project is complete it will look very similar to the route from the Hillegas to Hadley roads. “We’re going to have center turn lanes, concrete curbs and gutters, storm sewers and a path,” Hershberger said.

The trail will eventually connect all of Southwest Allen County to Northwest Allen and beyond.

“It’s going to take a little time to get there,” Hershberger said. “The cooperation with the citizens along Bass Road was very good. We appreciate your patience. I’ve been working with them for over five years now with all the closures and schedules and things like that.

“Now that the main corridor from Hadley to Hillegas is open, everyone understands where we’re going and what we’re going to accomplish with all of this,” Hershberger added.

The work is part of a multi-phase, multi-year project to upgrade Bass Road from Hillegas Road to Scott Road.
