Santa Margarita was at home Wednesday, but Mater Dei’s men’s basketball team made sure the Eagles didn’t feel comfortable there.
The Monarchs forced the game to be played at a fast pace to their liking while applying defensive pressure that prevented the Eagles from continuing to attack.
Mater Dei won the Trinity League game, 64-46, the first loss of the season for the Eagles.

The Monarchs, #1 in Orange County’s top 25, improved to 16-2 overall and 2-0 in the tournament. Number 5 Santa Margarita dropped to 12-1 and 1-1.
Zack Davidson, a 6-8 junior, led Mater Dei with 22 points and nine rebounds, the team’s highest. Freshmen Tee Bartlett (6-10, 240) and senior Jack McCloskey each scored 13 points, and Kaden Minter added 10.
McCloskey moved to Mater Dei from Santa Margarita before this school year. Of course, Santa Margarita’s “Eagle’s Nest” student section beat McCloskey all games. McCloskey responded with a stare at the Eagles Nest after most of his shooting, including his two 3-pointers.
Rockwell Reynolds, Santa Margarita’s junior, leads the Eagles with 14 points. Kyle Evans scored 11 points.
Davidson said Mater Dei’s tough defense was a key factor in the victory.
“Our game plan was to get up to speed and try to pick them all over the field or at least three quarters,” he said, “and we took them off offense that contributed to the game. having a low score makes us win.”
The Monarchs also shot better than Santa Margarita at the Eagles’ home ground. They took 24 of 47 shots from the field (51%). Many of Mater Dei’s shots were not fouled in his half, featuring constant motion and backdoor cuts into the basket.
Santa Margarita took 18 of 44 shots (41%).
Mater Dei also dominates in the revenue category, ranking seventh out of 15 for the Eagles.
The Monarchs soon took the lead and had an 18-10 advantage in the second half.
Santa Margarita committed six sales in the first quarter. Mater Dei overcame the Eagles 14-7 in the second quarter, with Santa Margarita finishing 3/12 in the ring to take a 32-17 lead at halftime.
A 15-2 Mater Dei run that started in the second quarter and continued into the third gave the Monarchs a 36-17 lead. Their biggest lead in the game was 23 points, 62-39, in the fourth inning.
Mater Dei heads to Massachusetts to compete Friday against East Catholic of Connecticut in the Spaulding Hoophall Classic. Monarchs’ next game is at home on Wednesday, January 19 against JSerra.
Santa Margarita’s next game is at home on Friday against St.John Bosco. The Eagles-Monarchs rematch takes place on January 27 at Mater Dei.
In the Garden Grove League:
Loara 66, Rancho Alamitos 47: Elias Farfat’s 19 points led the visitors to the Saxons (8-12, 2-1).
In the South Coast League:
Number 14 Tesoro 52, Number 24 San Clemente 43: Carson Brown scored 21 points and Nathan Draper added 16 points for the Titans (18-3, 3-0).
