After days of backlash and accusations sexualize children, Balenciaga finally released a statement apologizing for its recently launched Christmas campaign. Inside are photos of young girls donning Balenciaga clothing and holding “plush bear bags” (common!) made of stuffed animals who appear to be wearing black leather bondage gear (path less normal and quite worrying). Critics on social media called the campaign “disgusting” and “creepy”. survey Are the pictures real at all? Unfortunately for all of us, they very much are.

The fashion house apologized yesterday in an Instagram story for the action: “We sincerely apologize for any insults that our Christmas campaign may have caused,” it said. “Our plush bear bags should not have been shown with children in this campaign. We immediately removed the campaign from all platforms.”

But wait, there’s more: Twitter user @shoe0nhead also took a magnifying glass at Balenciaga’s “hourglass purse” ad (a Cut Campaign in collaboration with Adidas), the features the bag on a messy desk full of papers. At first glance, the picture seems utterly mundane (who am I to judge someone for a messy workplace?) until you realize that amidst the scattered papers are excerpts from the Supreme Court case United States vs. Williamswhich upheld part of a federal child pornography law by criminalizing its advertising, promotion and distribution.

This prompted Balenciaga to issue a second apology, in which they say:

We apologize for showing disturbing documents in our campaign. We take this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and instituting unauthorized items for our Spring 23 campaign photo shoot. We strongly condemn the abuse of children in any form. We stand for the safety and well-being of children.

It’s hard to believe that a company is so high end and known since Balenciaga – whose entire success revolves around highly controlled imaging – could overlook such egregious errors, up to publication. The public needs to wonder if these “unapproved items” were planted by a contractor/employee with agendaor whether a classic case of “shock factor” is really gone too far. Some have even speculated about the luxury brand leave twitter about to launch the campaign to avoid accountability for their questionable messages.

A big face of Balenciaga, Kim Kardashian has been bombarded on social media for remaining silent on the matter, with fans commenting on her with hashtags like #CancelBalenciaga and #BoycottBalenciaga Instagram posts. To to Cosmo, Bella Hadid, who has also worked closely with the brand, appears to have acted quickly and erased her previous collaboration with them Instagram.

It appears that Balenciaga’s own Instagram account is currently being deleted and has zero posts in total. Maybe they should leave it at that for a while while they investigate what the hell happened here.
