Award-winning Heritage Barbecue opens oceanfront location with brewery Sunday, January 15 – Orange County Register

San Juan Capistrano’s award-winning craft barbecue restaurant, Heritage Barbecue, is expanding south to Oceanside with its new Heritage Barbecue & Beer Co. location, opening Sunday, January 15th.
The restaurant, which opened during the pandemic after a string of successful pop-ups, quickly became known for 12- to 14-hour smoked meats that combine Texas and California cuisine. Shortly after opening, the restaurant was featured in Michelin’s California Guide as a Bib Gourmand restaurant, recognizing good food at an affordable price.
While the San Juan Capistrano location will not have an indoor dining area, the Oceanside location will be nearly 10,000 square feet with a full bar and speakeasy to follow.
Co-owner, Pitmaster and Executive Chef Daniel Castillo and his wife, co-owner Brenda, recently relocated to Oceanside with their family, leading to the decision to open their new concept there.
“We didn’t want to create just another Heritage Barbecue, we wanted this new venture to stand out from the crowd and truly create a craft barbecue brew pub of sorts,” Castillo said in a statement. “This will be more of a true dining experience with a full bar and of course craft beers that we will be making in-house to complement our unique SoCal-style craft barbecue.”
Award-winning local brewmaster Mike Aubuchon of Pizza Port Carlsbad joins the team. The restaurant will have 20 taps with a fresh selection of brand new craft beers – including a Mexican lager, a Japanese lager, a Czech Pilsner and a West Coast style IPA. Executive Chef Eric Linares will be relocating to Oceanside from the San Juan Capistrano location to oversee the new kitchen.
Unlike San Juan Capistrano, the Oceanside restaurant will not serve meat by the pound. The new menu includes barbacoa tacos (smoked beef cheeks on homemade tortillas), pastrami pie (homemade with a salt crust) served on bread from local bakery Hokkiado Baking Co., and sharing plates.
The new craft cocktails stay true to Heritage’s roots, with “The Main Attraction” bourbon made with brisket juice (fat separated) for flavoring.
Initial service hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
