Australia is home to some really twisted horror stories, and the land of terrifying beasts is also home to terribly good storytellers. One of the country’s hidden horror gems, The loversis now available on Paramount Plus and it’s about time you got into it.

The lovers is Australia’s loving response carrie and a decade of cheesy teen rom-com movies. Instead of a happy ending on prom night, however The lovers offers absolutely horrible bloodshed that will satisfy your darker urges. The 2010 cult horror classic, directed by Sean Byrne, is recognized as one of the finest genre films in Antipodean cinema and is now available to audiences in the United States.

Available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus, there’s never been a better time to check out the Aussie horror film. The lovers is named after a classic “pub rock” song of the same name by a band of the same name. The only way it could get more Aussie would be if the film reels were smothered with Vegemite.

The cast of The lovers isn’t quite A-list, but you’ll recognize her from several other films. Xavier Samuels has appeared in The Twilight saga and recently in Blondwhile Jessica McNamee was in misery Mortal Kombat 2021 film. Byrne went on to make another excellent horror film The Devil’s Sweets which was released in 2015.
