At 9 Chicago locations, organizations come together for the turkey giveaway

CHICAGO — Less than a week before Thanksgiving, one of Chicago’s biggest turkey giveaways arrived at nine different locations on Sunday, giving back to the community.

Bill Crane was among many at the Vault Gallery’s Pilsen site, and several other organizations helped put together the effort.

What started out as a small turkey giveaway the Sunday before Thanksgiving at West 87th Street and South Vincennes Avenue in 2013 have grown exponentially, but so has the need.

Crane’s World TV’s Bill Crane said the rise in inflation has also impacted the cost of buying a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. According to Crane, the birds were priced at around $7 at the start of the event. They’ve since gone up to $30 a turkey.

“Times are tough. [It’s] a cold day out here and over 1000 families will be blessed,” said Crane.

Volunteers gave not only their time and turkeys in the cold, but also fresh produce.

“You will see people hugging, crying, I mean the emotion and the joy that they have food on their table for the holidays so they can sit around the table with warm food in their stomachs and share a story with their family , it’s just a beautiful thing,” Crane said.
