Association For Electronic Music Appoints Silvia Montello as CEO – Billboard

The Association For Electronic Music (AFEM) has appointed a new CEO. Silvia Montello enters the top position of the association and has replaced the chairman of the board since 2018, Gregor Marshall.

Montello is based in London and joined AFEM – a dance industry group – in 2019 as a committee member. She has over 30 years of industry experience, including senior positions at music retailer Our Price Music, Printmagazine Gramophone Releases and labels PolyGram/Universal, BMG, and Kobalt Music/AWAL, where she served as senior vice president of operations.

More recently, Montello was Head of Business Development at software company Blokur before joining Audio Network in 2021 as Operations Manager. She is also CEO at VoiceBox Consulting, a music industry consulting firm providing marketing, communications, project management and business planning services, which she founded in 2011. She is also co-founder and current director of #remarQabl, an electronic music record label focused on emerging female, LGBTQ+ and racially diverse talent.

“Silvia has established herself as a powerful voice in the electronic music industry throughout her impressive career, along with a proven track record of creating and growing businesses to their full potential,” are co-founders and chairs of AFEM Ben Turner and Kurosh Nasseri it said in a joint statement. “From the moment she joined AFEM as a committee member in 2019, the organization benefited from her insightful contribution. She will be AFEM’s first female CEO, exemplifying our own growth as a trade organization over the past decade. We are grateful to Greg for his incredible work over the past four years in stabilizing the AFEM ship and showing great empathy for our membership community during our most challenging times as an industry.”

AFEM was founded in 2013 by Turner, director of Graphite Media and co-founder of the International Music Summit, along with Nasseri, a longtime consumer electronics attorney. In its almost ten-year existence, the association has been committed to connecting and representing the common interests of companies and artists in the field of electronic music. The non-profit organization has more than 250 members in 25 countries, representing all branches of the electronic genre.

“Our industry is evolving at a pace, always bringing with it new opportunities and new technologies,” Montello said in a statement. “I look forward to helping bring together an amazing ecosystem of platforms, organizations, professionals and creators to build sustainable success through innovation, diversity, inclusion and collaboration.”

In her first public appearance since taking on the role, Montello will deliver one of the opening speeches later this years International Music Summit in Ibiza, taking place on the island from April 27th to 29th, entitled Ten Years of AFEM: Association for Electronic Music.
