HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — A firefighter and a resident were injured after what may have been a fire at an apartment building in west Houston, investigators said.

The Houston Fire Department said around 5:30 p.m. crews were responding to heavy fire and smoke at an apartment complex on the 2500 block of Lazy Hollow Drive.

The fire reportedly started in the building’s common utility room and resulted in 12 units being damaged by the flames, according to HFD.

Investigators said the fire burned through the roof, collapsing it and damaging an electrical unit that cut power in two complexes.

A firefighter was taken to hospital for back injuries along with a resident who had some ailments, HFD said.

The fire was tamed at 5:41 p.m., according to authorities.

Investigators said they were interviewing witnesses after receiving reports of a suspect fleeing the area.

Firefighters reported several dogs and kittens who were rescued and reunited with their owners throughout the evening.
