Apartment fire: 4 units at the Oakwood Apartments destroyed in a fire in northwest Houston, the Houston Fire Department says

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — According to the Houston Fire Department, at least eight people have been displaced after a fire destroyed several residential units in northwest Houston.

Four units of the Oakwood Apartments were damaged by the fire, HFD officials said.

Denise Rhodes, a resident of the building, said she was returning home from the grocery store when the fire broke out.

“[I]just came home from grocery shopping at Walmart, packed all my stuff and was told to bring out a bucket of water, the upstairs apartment is on fire,” Rhodes recalled.

“We kept trying to pour water on it, got a hose on it, still didn’t put it out at all, the roof was on fire.”

Rhodes couldn’t help but think about the effect this fire would have on her father if things had gotten worse.

“I have a father who gets high-concentration oxygen. I was trying to figure that out before it all went up too much because if it did, there would be a big hole here,” she said.

HFD crews arrived just after 4 p.m. and were able to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes, but there were some challenges.

“Because it was inside the walls and the wood surfaces, they had to rip out a lot of pieces just to get to where the fire was. It’s labor intensive,” said Deputy Manager Rogers Westoff.

A fire has left several families homeless for two consecutive weekends in Houston.

On October 8, crews worked to put out a serious fire at a W. Houston apartment complex on Lazy Hollow Drive, where a firefighter and a resident were taken to the hospital.

Luckily, no one was injured, including the rescued service dogs.

Officials were unable to determine how the fire started. Fire investigators were on the scene but said there were no suspicious reports of activity.
