Annual HELP University Online English Debate Challenge 2021 for Asian Secondary Schools

HELP The University’s annual Asian Secondary School Online English Debate Challenge 2021 will be held from Friday 9th to 11th July 2021.

This competition, previously known as HELP University National Chinese Independent Secondary School (CISS) English Debate, has successfully attracted 40 competition teams from 24 non-English speaking middle schools from Malaysia and overseas.

This annual competition was established in 2021 by HELP University with the aim of improving the English language skills of secondary students in non-English middle schools, particularly the Chinese Independent Secondary Schools (CISS) in Malaysia.

From its inception to 2019, 8 rounds of the competition were held.

The outcome of the event was encouraging and the debaters’ self-confidence, especially in their English skills, improved significantly.

When the debating standard of CISS students reached a level comparable to students in national and private schools, HELP University opened the competition to SMJKs and SMK schools, as well as other non-English speaking middle schools from home and abroad.

In 2020, the university was unable to hold the competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, 2021, HELP University has decided to continue the annual debate, this time virtually. The name of the event has also been changed to HELP University Asian Secondary School Online English Debate Challenge.

The preliminary rounds will take place on Friday 9 July 2021 and Saturday 10 July 2021. The semi-finals and grand final will take place on Sunday 11 July 2021 at 10am.

There are attractive prizes for participants. These include four cash prizes, plaques and trophies, and study awards:

champion team: A one-year retainable Challenge Trophy, plaque and cash prize of RM3,000 for the school, 4 trophies and certificates for the team, and partial scholarships worth RM12,000 for each team member in the HELP group

Second place team: Plaque and cash prize of 2,000 RM for the school, 4 trophies and certificates for the team; Partial scholarships valid in the HELP group worth RM8,000 per team member.

Two semi-finalist teams: Plaque and cash prize of RM 1,000 for each school, 4 plaques and certificates for each team and partial scholarships pending in HELP group, worth RM 4,000 per team member,

Incidentally, the cash prize was donated by a well-wisher who prefers to remain anonymous, and the trophies are sponsored by Ngui & Associates. HELP University thanks them warmly.
