Americans are taking pumpkin spice sales to a new level

NEW YORK, — Americans leave the pumpkins for pumpkin spice.

Data from Nielsen shows that Americans spend about half a billion dollars on pumpkin spice products every year.

From the popularity of Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes to the annual launch of new pumpkin products like Hefty’s, pumpkin-scented garbage bags sell out.

Starbucks alone reportedly sells 20 million Pumpkin Spice Lattes annually.

According to the coffee giant, the popular pumpkin-flavored drink gave the company its best-ever sales week when the drink was re-introduced to fans on August 30.

“There’s no practical reason to put pumpkin in your cup of coffee, put it on your porch, sweeten it and put it in your pie,” said Cindy Ott, historian, college professor and author of ‘Pumpkin’: Die strange story of an American icon.’ “But these modern traditions actually hark back to much older traditions of associating the pumpkin with a small family farm. The idyllic kind of small family farm in American life.”

The colorful crop seems to hold a special place in the hearts, minds, and wallets of Americans.
