Airline passengers are facing significant price hikes due to new frequent flyer penalties

AIR passengers could face a big price hike due to a new frequent flyer penalty.
Scottish Greens transport spokesman Mark Ruskell says travelers who frequently fly between Scotland and London should be taxed to tackle aviation emissions.
The plans could include destinations accessible by rail but would exclude flights to the Scottish islands.
Speak with The ScotMr Ruskell said: “The key action the Scottish Government needs to take now is to look at the powers it has and how a frequent flyer tax could be introduced.
“It could ensure there is a more competitive playing field relative to rail in terms of pricing and also create a revenue stream that could be leveraged to invest in rail.
“The real focus would be on flights to London or other flights within the UK where there is a rail alternative.

“Many people fly to go on holiday and see family and friends and people on the islands are likely to fly more regularly – that would not be the aim of any fiscal measure to reduce air traffic.
“The design of any program must recognize that life-saving shore flights are important to the economic and social health of island communities.”
A Scottish Government spokesman said: “We continue to work with the UK Government to find an aviation solution that meets our climate ambitions.”
We reported how Loganair has announced a new service from Orkney Kirkwall Airport direct to London City Airport.
The flight will operate twice a week on a Tuesday and a Friday from April 4th.
The plane is expected to make a stopover in Dundee, but passengers are not required to disembark before continuing south.
It is hoped the three-and-a-half hour service will offer “enhanced connectivity” as part of the airline’s expansion programme.
